What kid doesn't love mac-n-cheese? Mine love it! Plus, its a quick and easy meal for hectic nights or for lunches. However, I cringe opening that packet of dehydrated processed cheese powder. I cannot imagine that it can be that good for them!
So, I've come up with a healther alternative that they still love, and is just as easy to prepare! I use
the Barilla Plus Macaroni noodles. These noodles are a complex carb, made with whole grains (which also means extra fiber!). They have Omega-3 fatty acids and protein added in, to give it an extra health punch! It makes me feel good knowing I'm not just giving them empty cheesy calories!

After you drain the noodles, add 1/2 cup of low-fat milk, 1 tbsp of butter or margarine, and 1 cup of shredded mild cheddar and heat until the cheese is melted. Add the noodles back in to coat with the cheese sauce and serve. Wah lah!!! Healthy mac-n-cheese they love and your mommy-conscience can feel good about!
i have found that slices of american cheese more closely mimic the taste of the powdered stuff because i am the same way, i had dumping that crap in - but bailee can tell the difference and demands the powder - so i use half the bag and then 2 slices of american cheese broken into small pieces to melt it easier. i tried the shredded cheese/cheddar and she refused to eat it...... but thanks for the info - that pasta is the best and there is NO way you can tell a difference!!!
ReplyDeleteYeah, unlike the whole wheat pasta, the Plus stuff tastes almost identical to the regular stuff. If anything, it has a slight nutty flavor, but its not overly chewey like the whole wheat.

ReplyDeleteBarilla plus is great for a vegan/vegetarian diet because of the extra omega-3. We can't get enough of it!
